“What happened to him?” Alexis asked with Phoebus listening intently by her side.

“He got discovered and killed,” Angelo said solemnly.

“But won’t they do the same to Seraphus?” Aurelia asked, alarmed.

“No, they would much rather try to extract information from him. Custos was clever enough to challenge Pravus - an extremely proud Turpi General - to single combat in front of his subordinates.”

The group followed the Rider in silence after this revelation. They were headed toward their bags which had now been carried to two tents not too far from where they landed.

“How small are we talking about exactly?” Phoebus asked after some time. Angelo peered at him over his shoulder.

“The tunnels I mean.” Something in his voice sounded different than usual.

Alexis’ head swerved at the hint of dread she thought she caught in his question. She had never thought Phoebus capable of fear.

“Humans should manage through all right.” Angelo’s response did little to ease Phoebus’ visible discomfort.

“So we’re here because you need miners?” Dominic’s tone was dripping with disappointment.

“Essentially,” Angelo said without looking back.

“What did you expect? You thought we’d be flown in to aid the vanguard?” Rufus gave an all-too-excited smile. “Five human volunteers sent to rescue an army of Riders!” he guffawed, eliciting a stern expression from Dominic.

“Make yourselves comfortable and get some rest. We stay here tonight, but we will set out for our fortification before daylight.” Angelo pointed the volunteers to their tents.
